Dilation and Curettage
Dilation and curettage is a medical procedure that involves the removal of tissues from inside of a uterus. It is popularly known as D&C. This is performed as part of the diagnosis and treatment of a number of uterine ailments – from heavy bleeding to clearing out the uterine line after an abortion or miscarriage.
This is a sensitive surgical process wherein your cervix is dilated (opened), and a small instrument is inserted into your uterus with the intention of removing tissues from the interior of your uterus (curettage).
There are several situations where your doctor might suggest you undergo a dilation and curettage process. Your gynecologist may ask you to go through either an endometrial sampling or therapeutic dilation and curettage based on your condition.
Possible Causes
An endometrial sampling of dilation and curettage is done to diagnose you if you have the following conditions:

The dilation and curettage procedure begins with you lying down on your back on a table and having your hells rest in supports known as stirrups. After that, you will be given anesthesia (general or local). It is followed by your surgeon inserting an instrument known as a speculum in your vagina. It would help your surgeon get a clear view of your cervix.
Next, your surgeon will gently insert thicker rods one after another into your cervix in order to dilate your cervix until it has opened up adequately. After that, the dilation rods are removed, and a spoon-shaped instrument or a suction device is inserted to remove uterine tissues. Since you are sedated, you won’t experience any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Recovery from D&C varies from person to person. Doctors generally advise rest for 2-3 days after the procedure. If the pain continues, you can take a week off from work. In most cases, the pain can be managed by regular pain pills.
